Huawei P10 vs iPhone 7

Huawei P10 and iPhone 7 at a glance

The Huawei P10 might look like the iPhone 7, but how does it compare overall? Previously the closest you could get to the iPhone without owning one was the Google Pixel. However, the Huawei P10 hopes to supplant the Pixel as an iPhone rival and hence there’s a lot of excitement about its release.

Although the Huawei P10 is Android, it looks like an Apple device and feels top of the range. Although, if you’re looking for something that’s like an iPhone, why not just opt for an iPhone 7?

Price-wise, the two handsets are similar. The iPhone 7’s larger storage options are more expensive than the Huawei P10’s standard storage. But you’re looking at over £500 for either device.

Product Specifications

The iPhone 7 has an A10 Fusion processor with 2GB RAM. It made it the fastest smartphone chip when the phone was released, but it has some stiff competition from the Huawei P10. The Huawei device has its custom Kirin 960 processor and 4GB RAM.

Apple’s iPhone 7 comes with a 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD with 326 PPI, various storage options, a lightning port, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and various sensors. The Huawei P10 has a full HD 5.1 inch IPS display with 16M colours and 432ppi. It also offers Bluetooth 4.2, has USB 2.0 and multiple sensors.

When it comes to raw power, the Apple device wins on core performance, but the Kirin 960 is better for multi-core usage. The Huawei device is ultra-fast, as is the Apple, and both have great operating systems. The iPhone 7 using IOS 10 and the Huawei P10 using Android 7.0 Nougat.

The Huawei P10 only offers a 64GB model but offers up to 256G of additional storage if using microSD cards. The iPhone 7 has a range of storage options – 32GB being the smallest and going up to 256GB but there is no additional storage available.

Battery wise, the Huawei P10 has 3,200mAh, whereas the iPhone 7 has just 1,960mAh – a dramatic difference. Both perform well for a whole day, but it would be difficult to get much use for a second day if constantly in use – both would need a charge.

Features: Huawei P10 and iPhone 7

Apple always seems to have one of the better smartphone cameras on the market for everyday usage. The iPhone 7 doesn’t quite have the camera specs of the iPhone 7 Plus, and this is also true of the Huawei P10 device. The iPhone 7 has a pair of 12mp shooters, whereas the Huawei P10 has a 12MP colour sensor with a 20MP monochrome camera.

Huawei’s dual setup makes for the variable zoom with sharp results. You can also get amazing shots with either individual camera. Although the iPhone 7 camera will give you great results, the Huawei P10 has more perks. The Huawei P10 offers a new Portrait mode and can identify and track 190 different facial points in a 3D space. The front-facing camera also has a new sensor. Huawei claims that this has both a wider dynamic range and allows double the amount of brightness compared to their older handsets. They also claim that the smartphone is meant to be ‘smart’ enough to distinguish between a selfie and group shot, and adjusts the angle to suit the picture.

The iPhone 7 has a decent camera setup, perhaps one of the best there is, but the Huawei P10 pips it to the post when it comes to capturing shots.

The mobile display of the Huawei P10 has the edge over the iPhone 7. Apple has kept to their 1334 x 750 resolution for their standard 4.7inch model, which fans would love them to update. Although it looks good, the Huawei P10’s display is far more spectacular.

An upgrade on previous Huawei models, the display is a 1080p panel that packs 431 pixels per inch (the iPhone 7 only manages 326 PPI). The screen is also larger. The Huawei screen is 5.1 compared to the iPhone’s 4.7 (unless opting for the iPhone 7 Plus at 5.5inch) and the phone is slightly wider than the Apple handset.

The iPhone 7 has the same core design as the iPhone 6 and 6s. The design is classy and while there are some tweaks from earlier models (new colours, less obvious antenna lines) it still follows a tried and tested design that people love.

The obvious change is the lack of a headphone jack; a short-sighted move by Apple considering most people still require one of these. The Huawei P10 looks almost identical to the Apple handset. The key differences are that the Huawei has a headphone jack and Pantone partnered colours.

The Huawei P10 is very reminiscent of its predecessor, the P9, but there have been some subtle changes. Most notably, Huawei has moved the fingerprint scanner and widened the array of colourful finishes.

When it comes to colour, the iPhone 7 is available in these shades: black (a plain matt black), jet black (a high gloss black only available for the higher storage options), red, silver, gold and rose gold. The Huawei comes in these same colours, but there isn’t a matt and gloss option for black.

Which mobile comes out on top?

These phones are closely matched, but there’s a winner: the Huawei P10. The larger display on the Huawei P10 makes it ideal for viewing videos and playing games on. The decision to move the fingerprint scanner to a more intuitive position and include a headphone jack in the design makes it a more user-friendly phone altogether.
